Sometimes you are walking along in life and all the sudden it feels like no one else is around.
You look to your left and to your right and you see people. You look ahead of you and behind you and, sure enough, people are there. But somehow, you still feel alone.
You’re sitting in a crowded room and all you hear is silence.
You hear yourself talking, but the words seem as if they are coming from somewhere else.
You’re staring at a sunset, but all you see is black and white.
You, my friend, are disconnected.
We’ve all been there, and quite honestly, I’m not a doctor or a preacher, but I think it is a normal part of life. I also think it can help your relationship with God to go through periods of disconnectedness.
Once you identify that you truly are disconnected; that somehow you and God have drifted away from each other, then what do you do?
Over the next couple of days I will discuss some ideas that might help you reconnect with your creator.
First off, realize that you and God have not drifted apart. You have drifted away from God. He’s still there, you just can’t feel him.
I picture a remote control for your TV. When you are sitting in your living room, flipping through the channels, the connection is strong. The TV responds as soon as you press a button. But take your remote into the bathroom with you and see if you can change channels from there. The TV hasn’t moved, and the remote is still sending out the same signal, but there are things in the way. Something is blocking the signal from getting to where it needs to go.
Once you move back into range, then the TV will respond again. The TV isn’t going to chase you around the house trying to get you to send it signals. It will patiently wait until you are back in range and the blockage has been removed.
Simply acknowledging that there is a problem can oftentimes be the catalyst for a reconnection. However, there are steps we can take to make this connection stronger than it was before.
This is probably the most obvious solution. Go to God. Talk to him. Let him know what you are feeling. Ask him to reveal to you why you feel this way. You might feel pretty ridiculous at first. After all, you are disconnected and you haven’t been able to hear God. If you could hear him there wouldn’t be a problem. That’s when it is time to call out to him loudly, and repeatedly.
The remote isn’t working! You ask the TV what is in the way. and at first you don’t get an answer, but eventually you hear it, that faint signal coming through telling you, “there are two walls and a cabinet in the way, dummy.”
Ask God to show you what is in the way. Most definitely, he will show you what the problem is.
Is there sin in your life that needs to be dealt with?
Do you need to forgive someone?
Do you need to ask for forgiveness?
Have you just not been communicating with God?
It could be any number of things. As you move back into the living room, you will get a better idea of what else is in the way.
Just be prepared for the answer. It might not be something simple. God may be waiting for you to take a big leap of faith. God may ask you to do something way outside of your comfort zone. God may reveal something to you that you had never seen before. It might not be pretty, but neither is sitting in a dark bathroom holding a remote control to a TV that’s nowhere near you.
Have you prayed lately?
