People serve many gods. They serve gods of greed, power, lust, and gluttony. They serve gods of cars, houses, and flat panel TVs. They serve gods of clothes, shoes, and purses. They serve gods of pornography and other sexual immoralities.
In short, we find new gods to serve all the time.
But there is only one God that can truly give us the joy and the peace that we seek. There is only one God that can provide the strength to battle against the evils of this world.
While reading through Psalms I came across a description of who that God is. For anyone who hasn’t met him, this is who he is:
Psalms 18 (NLT)
1 I love you, Lord; you are my strength.
2 The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.
As long as you have the courage to put on the free armor he offers.
6 …in my distress I cried out to the Lord; yes, I prayed to my God for help. He heard me from his sanctuary; my cry to him reached is ears.
16 He reached down from heaven and rescued me; he drew me out of deep waters.
17 He rescued me from my powerful enemies, from those who hated me and were too strong for me.
19 He led me to a place of safety; he rescued me because he delights in me.
No matter how many times you screw up, and now matter how big you screwed up in the past, he is always there to rescue you. Unlike your family, spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend, or best friend, he will never let you down.
25 To the faithful you show yourself faithful; to those with integrity you show integrity.
26 To the pure you show yourself pure, but to the wicked you show yourself hostile.
27 You rescue the humble, but you humiliate the proud.
He constantly guides you, teaches you, and corrects you. And he does it all out of love. He does it all to help perfect you so that you may have a stronger relationship with him. This is what he desires most.
32 God arms me with strength, and he makes my way perfect.
33 He makes me as surefooted as a deer, enabling me to stand on mountain heights.
34 He trains my hands for battle; he strengthens my arm to draw a bronze bow.
You are his warrior, using his Word as a mighty sword. Everyday you are in training. Everyday you are in battle. Everyday you go back to him in victory, or in defeat. Everyday he opens his arms to you, and embraces you, telling you how much he loves you.
35 You have given me your shield of victory. Your right hand supports me; your help has made me great.
36 You have made a wide path for my feet to keep them from slipping.
He treats you better than you could ever imagine. He gives you more than you ever deserve. He fought a battle for you that you could never win. He is you father, your God, and your savior. He is alive.
46 The Lord lives! Praise to my Rock! May the God of my salvation be exalted!
